Prayer

My good brother Samuel at A Lion Has Roared wrote this thought of his down which also gave me much to think about.

I have often said: “He who thinks little of God in his time thinks very little of God in his heart”; I still hold to that tenaciously. However, I would today, reiterate it with greater potency. Indeed, he who thinks little of God in his life, that is, he who does not pray but now and then; who does not read the Word of his acclaimed Father but under compulsion; who does not ponder the Truth on a daily basis and humbly surrender himself to It; he is a man who will not merely think of God less often than he could, but one who will not consider God correctly when he most desperately needs the God he knows so inconsiderably.

How can I honestly claim a Friend, Father and Savior to Whom I seldom speak, and worse, to Whom I never listen?

That man is me on so many occasions…

Well, a collage, actually. Just in case some of you are beginning to wonder where I’ve been and what I’ve been up to…

Back when I was learning to drive, I “discovered” a pretty nifty extension that the instructors use to have over-riding control of the car — they had the brake pedal extended to the passenger side of the car to immediately stop the car should anything go wrong.

It was a good thing that my instructor only had to use it once when I made a rather stupid mistake while making a U-turn. With the additional brake pedal on their side, it didn’t matter how much I stepped on the accelerator pedal; the car just wouldn’t move until the instructor was entirely sure that it was safe to move on.

In many ways, God’s sovereignty in our lives is much like the instructor and his extended brake pedal. While the additional safeguard in the car made me feel at ease (mostly), God’s sovereignty in our lives should give us joy.

From what I understand, doctors and paramedics have certain guidelines when it comes to resuscitating people who have either lost their heartbeats or stopped breathing. After a certain amount of time, the doctors and paramedics just have to make a call and declare the person dead.

How do we apply this principle when it comes to counseling wayward Christians or people who think that they are Christians?

Over the past few days, after I have highlighted how deluded Chee Seng was with the prosperity gospel, a few good brothers and sisters like Denise and Phil have been at his blog trying to counsel him and make him see that what he’s espousing and following is a false gospel.

Loving and Supporting PastorsMy recent posts on how Christians should not take their pastors’ words as they are but to search the Scripture for themselves had some people misunderstand that I don’t advocate supporting and loving our pastors.

I don’t see how such a misunderstanding can arise, as I personally see these two issues as unrelated.

The point is: while our pastors deserve our support and love, it does not mean that they won’t be in error sometimes as they are mere men. When errant teachings are preached from the pulpit, we have a responsibility to both ourselves and our fellow church members to search the Scriptures and point them out.

Ultimately, we answer to God, not to the pastor and he, too, is answerable to God for what he teaches from the pulpit.

From Darkness to LightForeword: I thought I’d give a little background into how this testimony came about, because it simply demonstrates how often God works wonderfully in us and there’s only goodness when we submit to His will.

For some days now, my wife has told me that she hasn’t been able to sleep well because God has prompted her time and again to write her testimony down.

She asked me why, and I told her testimonies were a good way for us to glorify God through telling others what He has made anew in us. As to why God is telling her to do so I am not sure, yet we need trust that the Lord has need for her to do something that has not been revealed, but it’s all good.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28

We had retired rather late to bed last night. Just 15 minutes later, she was out of bed, and the study light came on while her computer whirred to life. When I popped into the study to ask why she wasn’t in bed, she was quite in tears, telling me that God had admonished her for not submitting to His will, right after prayers.

She had been fighting the burden in her heart to write her testimony down, believing wrongly that it’s rather pointless.

It was the first time she had experienced such a prompting, so I gently told her that that’s what God does with me many, many times over — a feeling so heavy in one’s heart that you go on your knees and cry out saying, “Father, Lord, I’ll obey and do it!”

I made coffee for us and stayed up with her while she completed her testimony which we are now sharing with you. May it encourage and bless you as it has us.

Read, Weep and PrayOver the last few days I have been led to read more of the harms of the prosperity gospel and its effects on ordinary Christians like you and me. I don’t specifically look out for these accounts, but I believe God has led me to read them and warn others.

Some are really heart-wrenching accounts where families have lost loved ones and almost everything they owned. In the end, I can only conclude that the prosperity gospel not only takes away all that one has materially and turn one’s life on its head, but, more dangerously, it can also take away lives of those who trust in the falsehoods!

In one such instance that is very well-documented, let me share with you the account from the Parker family.

The LORD Heals

Hallelu YaH!Thank you, everyone, who has remembered me and the pain I was going through in your prayers!

The LORD heals indeed!

Hallelu et Adonai!

Prior to the procedure this afternoon, I’ve heard so many horrible stories from friends and colleagues about how much pain some of them had after having their wisdom teeth extracted surgically.

But because of all your prayers, the LORD has healed me and seen to it that I am not suffering in pain after my surgery.

I’ve just awoken after a good few hours of much-needed sleep, and there’s absolutely no pain, whatsoever. Yes, read that: NO pain!

No doubt I’ve had painkillers and am faithfully following the instructions to complete the prescription of antibiotics, but with my limited knowledge from the testimony of others, I know that suffering no residue pain at all in the immediate hours after the surgery is a miracle in itself.

Thank you, LORD, for you are good and merciful. Thank you, LORD, for you are our Jehovah Rapha!

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Psalm 103:1-5

Amen!

Indian Leper CommunityDuring His ministry on earth, our Lord Jesus Christ cleansed a good number of lepers as recorded in the Gospels. Perhaps the best-known and oft-preached story of such cleansings is in the account of the 10 lepers:

On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”

Luke 17:11-19

In fact, the Hebrew word in the Masoretic texts for leprosy is tzaraath, which is an incurable condition worse than leprosy.

A person with tzaraath will experience inflammations, rashes, swellings and boils. Wool, linen or leather (common materials for clothing then) vestments put on him will also become infected. In other words, someone with tzaraath will not be able to cover his shame (for it is regarded as punishment for sins) and will be ostracized.

Perhaps there comes a time in your walk with God where you realize that maybe you have learned so much falsehoods or teachings that have been twisted in one way or another from church and even the most respected pastors and teachers, that you think that perhaps you haven’t really lived a real Christian life.

It’s not a real Christian life because you have not learned to be truly obedient, nor truly submit yourself to God’s will. It’s not a real Christian life because you think that being subject to God’s will is just trying to do what is taught in the Bible and have the faith that God shall answer your prayers, and thinking to yourself that you’ve asked them in accordance to God’s will.

And to think that you’ve been dissing the prosperity gospel when you yourself are living it! Because the prosperity gospel in its essence is about you, you, and you!

Because, when you pray, don’t you say “Oh, Lord, bless me” with this or that, a job, a wife, a girlfriend/boyfriend, and whatever that your heart desires, you preach within yourself the prosperity gospel!

Faith & PornographyThe advertising adage that sex sells is taken to new extremes today — if you can’t think of some refreshing concept for a product or service, just slap on a nude female form (cover it in some cloth or put it in silhouette so that it passes the censors though) and there’ll be many who will notice it.

Job done.

Our senses are bombarded with sexual images all the time throughout the course of a day that you need to be blind in order to totally ignore them because they are just so in-your-face.

This song for Shabbat has a special meaning for me as, with thanksgiving, I seek God’s own Will for me following the episode at work last Friday.

do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7

Shabbat Shalom.

Take heed, you God-less political leaders who are proposing to divide up Eretz Yisrael, God’s possession, while you barter and debate in Annapolis in the name of “peace”.

Yet, in reality you are but only trying to sate the selfish motives of your own dark hearts!

Take heed, for the LORD has made a promise unto His own and shall give unto you due judgment!

For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet,
until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,
and her salvation as a burning torch.
The nations shall see your righteousness,
and all the kings your glory,
and you shall be called by a new name
that the mouth of the Lord will give.
You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
You shall no more be termed Forsaken,
and your land shall no more be termed Desolate,
but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her,
and your land Married;
for the Lord delights in you,
and your land shall be married.
For as a young man marries a young woman,
so shall your sons marry you,
and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
so shall your God rejoice over you.

On your walls, O Jerusalem,
I have set watchmen;
all the day and all the night
they shall never be silent.
You who put the Lord in remembrance,
take no rest,
and give him no rest
until he establishes Jerusalem
and makes it a praise in the earth.
The Lord has sworn by his right hand
and by his mighty arm:
“I will not again give your grain
to be food for your enemies,
and foreigners shall not drink your wine
for which you have labored;
but those who garner it shall eat it
and praise the Lord,
and those who gather it shall drink it
in the courts of my sanctuary.”

Go through, go through the gates;
prepare the way for the people;
build up, build up the highway;
clear it of stones;
lift up a signal over the peoples.
Behold, the Lord has proclaimed
to the end of the earth:
Say to the daughter of Zion,
“Behold, your salvation comes;
behold, his reward is with him,
and his recompense before him.”
And they shall be called The Holy People,
The Redeemed of the Lord;
and you shall be called Sought Out,
A City Not Forsaken.

Isaiah 62:1-12

Amen!

As for us, my dear Christian brethren and sisters, remember Israel and pray incessantly for her and Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).

Shalom Aleichem.

I saw the following video on Daniel’s blog and, after watching it, immediately agreed that it’s so true that most of us nowadays do not really speak with conviction when it comes to defending our faith.

Yea, you might see some people you know or have come across in the video. Perhaps you will even see yourself in it.

So why are we so afraid to speak our mind?

I can think of two good reasons:

This Shabbat, I have learned of two prayer requests that I hope you will help bring to God our Father in your prayers.

Two of my dear sisters and a brother are facing trials in their lives right now, and they need all our help to bring their cares unto the Father in prayer.

I hope, that even if you don’t know them, that you include them in your prayers, for we are one body in Christ Jesus, and our prayers are like unto God a sweet incense when we pray together.

Michelle’s daughter Jacqui is terribly sick, and I know how much Jacqui is precious to Michelle and a blessing unto her. Shalene and Bobby are facing a difficult pregnancy; they have been so happy about this pregnancy but now there have been some uncertainties.

Lord God our Father,

We give praise unto you for you are God who made the heavens, the earth, the sea, the stars to shine, the sun to shine, and by your word everything came into being. You are Lord of all that is in the heavens, and on the earth, and in the sea.

You are Lord of our lives and your blessings and mercies are upon us each and every day even when we don’t deserve them. You are love, and righteousness, and mercy, and all that is good.

We thank you, Lord, for promising that all things work for good to those who love you. We thank you, Lord, for being our God, and though we never are always faithful unto you, that you are faithful, and just. For even the hairs of our heads are counted, because you are God that formed us and know our hearts.

Father, we bring unto you our prayers for Jacqui, Michelle’s precious daughter. Lord, you are the mighty God that formed her, and you are the loving God who gave Jacqui unto Michelle for a blessing and a joy.

Lord, you know how sick Jacqui is, and how worried Michelle is. Lord we lift our voices and pray that your comfort and peace, the peace that comes beyond understanding, come upon both daughter and mother. Lord, we pray earnestly that you heal Jacqui and restore the little girl her health.

Oh, Lord, we know how you love little children, and Lord you know how much Michelle loves her. Lord you know what our hearts desire even before we speak of them unto you, and we know you desire the best for us as our Loving Father.

Father, you are the God who heals, the God who comforts and the God who provides. We pray today for your healing upon Jacqui, and your comfort and provision unto Michelle and her household.

Father, we also bring unto you our prayers for Bobby and Shalene. Lord, you see how much they love each other and their family. For truly, through them we see your love for them and for us.

Lord, let your comfort and peace come upon them as they worry about this pregnancy. Lord, you know their hearts, and how happy and blessed they are that they have this pregnancy. Lord, you remember how Shalene was thanking you for gifting this unto her.

Therefore, Lord God our Father, we beseech you that you bless them with a successful pregnancy.

Your will be done, Oh Lord our God.

In Christ Jesus we pray,

Amen.

Worshipping Idols

Worshipping IdolsWe often think of idols as graven images of humans or animals fashioned by machines or human hands and which people worship.

Yet, here’s another definition of idols that I was just mulling over.

You see, in a broader sense, idols can be anything in our lives that takes us away from serving God with all our minds, our hearts and our souls.

In remembrance of Sep 11, 2001Six years ago on this date, September 11, more than 3,000 people lost their lives in a matter of minutes as two commercial jet airliners crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City.

I still remember it very clearly.

Just as those who experienced first-hand seeing J.F.K. shot remember vividly what they were doing at the time of his death, I remember this event so clearly like it only happened minutes ago.

My wife and I had just finished up some shopping we needed to get done at Ikea, and have just reached home. As I switched the television set on to CNN, these horrific pictures greeted us.

Why Do We Fast?

Why fast?I have to admit: I have never ever fasted. Not once, not even for a short duration of time.

However, I have been giving it some thought. Not fasting itself per se, but the act of fasting.

Just the other day in the study, my wife popped her head past her monitor, looked at me and asked, “Dear, why do Christians fast?”

(We have 2 PCs in the house, both set up opposite the other back-to-back)

Honestly, I was stumped and couldn’t give her an answer simply because I have never done it, nor really explored this aspect of faith and prayer. In the end, I had to ashamedly fire up Google for a few good articles on why Christians fast.

Total SurrenderEd’s post on his blog about how jaded he is having to juggle so many things and also taking on the burdens and tasks of others because he can be a softie (like me) inspired this post.

In my previous post about surrendering to God’s will when we pray, I talked about how I am learning to really let God’s will drive my life instead of going it alone like Rambo.

Since then I’ve been trying my hardest to follow up on what I said I was going to do in terms of surrendering my life to God’s will, and here I will share a few things that I’ve been doing and that which I find really helpful.

Morning Prayer

Pray, keep praying and more importantly, make prayer the first thing or one of the first things you do before you begin your day. In that prayer, give praise to God for everything, and surrender the day to God.

Learning to trustHow many of us Christians pray and always say “Let it be your will, Lord, not mine” and really mean it?

I truly examined that yesterday afternoon, as I took steps to pray more like I mentioned I would a couple of days ago.

There are some problems in my life now that are due to a period where I was without a job and found it hard to make ends meet with the meager amount of savings left. Just yesterday, I had to get a matter settled which I really worried about.

I finally decided that I shan’t worry anymore and just leave it up to God and His will.

However, right after I prayed, I began to seriously ask myself “Did I really mean it when I said that it is in God’s will?”.

Prayer

Coming across other Christian blogs and getting to know some of the authors, there’s one thing I realize that I come up short when it comes to my walk with God.

Prayer.

I am not comparing myself with them in some kind of weird competition to see who has more favor from God or something but I realize that, from reading their blogs on a regular basis, that they are prayer warriors who have a real desire to communicate with God.

And that’s one aspect of my walk with God I want to improve on. Paul exhorts us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) but that’s what I never do, not even sporadically.
