American Idol Mangles “Shout to the Lord”

This was brought to my attention at Symphony of Scripture since I don’t have a television set, much less cable.

I wonder who they are referring to when they replaced “Jesus” with “Shepherd” and called that shepherd “Lord” and “Savior”, amongst other things.

Unfortunately, the world doesn’t give two hoots about glorifying the name of Jesus (oh! if only they knew of Philippians 2:9-11!), but neither are many churches nowadays to be honest. Throw in the Emergents and Universalists and what you get is a big bowl of confusion.

The Bible is very clear about the glorification of Jesus’ name, and how His name is above all names.

let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

Acts 4:10-12

and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.

Ephesians 1:19-21

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:9-11

Seriously, if they are intent on performing a worship song, at least do it properly, eh? This is no mistake because we all know how American Idol is a very well-orchestrated series — the name of Jesus Christ is deliberately left out perhaps to please universalists and thereby garnering more donations?

Then again, what can we really expect from a secular program that carries a title that says much about turning the contestants into “idols” to be venerated and worshipped by adoring fans?

My apologies for making you listen to that junk. Here’s a little consolation — you can listen to the actual version in the video below.

Praise the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Incidentally, hour one of the Way of the Master Radio broadcast on Thursday, 10 April 2008, has a great discussion (and rant) on this issue.

Shabbat Shalom.

Well, actually I have been watching the series. Let me say that, firstly it makes me mad (an understatement) that they removed ‘Jesus’ from that song. I will never grasp why we must melt our faith down to suit others. Secondly, and on a better note. Last weeks show was on ‘Country’ music and many of the songs sung were about Jesus and, yes, they did sing the word Jesus! Dolly Parton was the guest star, and she sang her new song - all about Jesus too! I have no idea why, one week they all sang about Jesus and the next week they removed His name. I can only guess that they possibly received complaints about it. I deduce from this that it isn’t ‘American Idol’ that are at fault here, but some other power dictating to them.

Ah yes, Babs, I heard about that episode too from the same radio program. Funny how I learn about TV shows from a radio broadcast over the Internet, lol!

I heard Dolly Parton had a dig at Simon Cowell too right after her rendition? :D

    Hmmm,

I was at cell, so didn’t manage to listen, though I sortof heard about some it coz some people at the house we were at were watching American Idol. But I wasn’t that interested so I didn’t follow some of them to the TV set to watch. But yea, good observation.

Huh. I totally missed this on the Wednesday show… probably because we have a DVR and I typically fast forward through all the ‘group sings’ which I find kinda boring. I think it’s particularly interesting though ,that when they did the song again on the Thursday night show, the name Jesus was right back where it should be. Perhaps the producers have been watching the response on You Tube?

I have to admit, I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. On the one hand it is a great song that deserves to be heard, but on the other hand, hearing it sung by ‘American Idols’, most of whom could probably care less, seemed a bit sacrilegious.

Mic: they did? Hmm… I guess enough Evangelicals cared to call through and complain about it, which is a good sign I think. I’m not so sure about the contestants either, but I’m not going to judge, except to say that if any of them were a true Christian, I hoped that they raised objections to taking the name of Jesus out of the song!

That song was one full of adoration towards Jesus. How… just how has it been turned into an entertainment material? It is a lovely song and rightly so because it was a song meant to praise and worship God’s name!

I’ve only found out about it reading it here… since I don’t watch TV. It scares me to know that “anything is right” as long as there a “good reason” to justify one’s actions.

Hi, yes they did use the name Jesus on the second night and on the itune download. Now the song is no. 1 on itune.

Jesus’ name is being glorified. Satisfied??

I m dunno what’s wrong with you christians. Jesus himself is our shepherd! I was so thankful that a well known worship song is sung on a famous secular show. Imagine now many youths whether christian or not learning this song for the first time. Even if just 1 become a christian or get to know about Jesus, i think it has served its purpose. :)

There are two things about this. The first is that it is marketing. Approximately 10% of American’s are Christian. That is a lot of people watching TV, and if you can convince Christians that a program is “acceptable” they will continue to watch it.

The second is issue is that this does show that people do, deep down inside, understand that there is a God. They think that rejecting the specifics and sanitizing him to their liking will make their life easier; it doesn’t is just makes life harder.

I can’t believe they would try to censor the name of Jesus. Everyone knows that the lyric is in that particular song.

However, honestly, shepherd does sound a little better here. If Jesus came back to earth and I saw him, I might bow to him and say “my shepherd,” but I doubt I would say “My Jesus.” The second one just sounds a little selfish. Jesus is savior to all who believe, not just me.
