Joseph -- perhaps the most under-rated man in the Bible

Have you ever wondered who the most under-rated man in the Bible is? It certainly isn’t John, or Joshua, or James, but his name also begins with a “J” when anglicized.

Here’s who: Joseph.

No, no, not the Joseph who served the Egyptian pharaoh and therefore saved his father Jacob and his own family from famine, but the Joseph who married Mary and fathered other children with her, among whom is James the half-brother of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I mean, this man Joseph is seldom mentioned in sermons on obedience though I think he must have been one of the most obedient servants. When he was asked to marry Mary, his betrothed who was then with child, he didn’t say “no”. Neither did he refuse to flee to Egypt when told to do so.

Sure, Joseph did at one point consider breaking his betrothal to Mary (Matthew 1:19), but which man wouldn’t?

Consider this: here was a man who saw that his betrothed was pregnant, but he obeyed and still married her after being told that she was chosen to bear the Savior who was to come.

Betrothal just meant that they were match-made to marry each other, usually at birth, not like what we have today where a man and a woman marry after some period of courtship. Besides, we are talking about him possibly thinking that Mary had been unfaithful, as betrothals were treated as marriages proper even before the couple ‘tie the knot’.

So what’s my point writing a whole post about Joseph being the most under-rated man in the Bible? Well, I thought I’d point it out since not much is mentioned of him after the flight to Egypt. The Bible is also silent on whether he became a believer, but I thought his total obedience needed some mention.

Moreover, there must have been something God saw in this man to appoint him guardian over our Lord Jesus Christ when He was but a child.

Now that we know who the most under-rated man in the Bible is, let’s look at who the most dangerous woman in the world is.

According to Bill Keller in this TV interview, its Oprah Winfrey! Just watch the video why she is:

Shalom Aleichem.

I was an Oprah fan until about ten years ago…. her claims to be Christian didn’t match up with what she was saying. I agree that she is a “New Age Guruist” than anything else.

By the way Isaiah, THANK YOU for the video which has a closed captioning button on it. I was able to understand the video in whole. ;)
    God Bless!

Isaiah, you have had the most interesting posts lately. I have no doubts that whatever God is putting on my heart, He seems to be putting on your heart as well.

I never cared for Oprah, but when she started praising “The Secret”, I knew to stay away from her.

The New Age is growing so rapidly, and there is going to come a point when God says, “I’ve had enough”. I was part of it about 10 years ago, and at the time I felt like the only one. Now, horoscopes, yoga, wicca, reincarnation, belief in ghosts, etc. all these things have become so widely accepted it is scary!

I watched Oprah too for some time last year after discovering it on cable here. I gotta admit some of her shows were kinda fun, especially the home makeovers (my feminine side talking here, you know). And Dr. Phil was kinda refreshing as well… lol!

Lost interest after awhile, and now that she’s got this New Age thing going, I’m not suggesting anyone watch it anymore, especially Christians.

Now that you mention it, I’ll try to make sure videos have closed captioning in future wherever possible, Hannah. Ugh, how inconsiderate of me sometimes… #:-S

I have no idea why your comment ended up in the spam bin, Justin, Good thing I checked! :-B
My theory is that people are looking for something outside of our dross existence nowadays. Modernization hasn’t made our lives better, it’s quite the opposite. It’s all work and no play now. Where once people had time to have a cuppa and just chat, we are too busy in our “to and fro” lives to do so now…

And even when we do, Blackberries, mobile phones and the ilk disrupt unceasingly. Ever been walking with a friend/colleague and hoping to have a conversation but half the time he’s on the phone? Irritating!

The worse thing is that Emergent churches are also getting into yoga, meditation, etc., and so are countless Christians thinking that it’s harmless exercise and even good ways to reflect on God’s teachings. Sigh! The (almost non-existant) level of discernment today both saddens and worries me.

Alan: I don’t know why he (Joseph) just popped into my head and got me thinking… 8-> but it was an interesting short study.
