Unfortunately, I don’t have much time today to actually write the post that I had planned to, it being the second day of the Chinese Lunar New Year so there’s visiting to be done.
In light of that, I thought I’d leave you with some interesting bits that I’ve come across in the past 24 hours.
Secular TV Series Reveals Emergent/Post-Modern Deathbed Evangelism
This is really funny, but very sad at the same time. Whatever happened to telling people the truth in the Bible as it is where it pertains to their eternal state?!
I just love the dying man’s retort!
Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed
Alright, I need to catch this movie when it’s released, and I do hope that it makes its way to Singapore.
The film is by Ben Stein who “…realizes that he has been ‘Expelled’, and that educators and scientists are being ridiculed, denied tenure and even fired for the ‘crime’ of merely believing that there might be evidence of ‘design’ in nature, and that perhaps life is not just the result of accidental, random chance.”
You can find out more about the movie at its official website.
It made me think — if I were a science teacher and had to teach whatever is mandated in the textbooks knowing that it is wrong, i.e. evolution, what should my position be?
Hmm… I think I shall try finding out from some Christian friends of mine who are themselves teachers in public schools here.
P-P-Pastor’s Wife?!
I have never paid much attention to the singer Ho Yeow Sun (Ho is her surname, Chinese names are written last name, first name), who is also the wife of pastor Kong Hee, and ‘was the music pastor’ at City Harvest Church.
Until some days ago when I took a look at a forum post that linked to what I wrote on teachings at the church and saw this video which left me flabbergasted.
I am not going to link to the official video of the song which I think is quite risque, but you can do a search for ‘China Wine’ on YouTube if you’re interested.
From what I understand, she used to teach young people at the church against listening to secular music and dressing up to titillate. I wonder what happened to all that, or do those lessons not apply to her good self?
I also wonder if she is aware of, or concerned with, the fact that she’s the wife of a pastor with a flock of 23,000 or more, and probably a role model of said congregation, a majority of whom are young impressionable people?
Before anyone accuses me of being legalistic, let me just say that I believe that those in leadership capacities or were in leadership capacities should be careful to not do anything that might cause others to stumble.
Would you want to see your children’s teacher smoking in front of them, or a respected ex-teacher suddenly featured as a centerfold in an adult-only publication?
Shabbat Shalom.

On Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed:
Intelligent design is a theory with very little scientific evidence going for it. It is not just a matter of faith. You cannot make something become true just by merely believing in it.
There is nothing wrong in introducing it if it is also taught impartially along with evolutionary theory. But the proponents of intelligent design don’t do that. They want to convert their students to their own brand of their Christian faith.

On P-P-Pastor’s Wife?!
sicarii my brother, I think those people who share your sentiments have already left CHC a long time ago, ever since they pushed Ho’s first CDs in the middle of a church service.
There’s really nothing more to talk about this anymore. We can only pray that the Holy Spirit does His work among his congregation and speak to them personally.

Ha ha, XZ, yea, I know I’m quite late on this piece of information. Just thought I’d share my thoughts on it nonetheless.

This is a no-brainer isn’t it? If you teach evolution, then you teach AGAINST creation period. We are to obey our leaders, employers etc. as long as they don’t make you go against God and sin! Now you can ask your scientific Christians friends this question but their opinion holds no more weight than any other Christian. We are Christians FIRST - everything we do is SUPPOSED to be within those boundaries set forth in Scripture. We do not deviate from those boundaries just because our job requires it!!!

I agree with you, Carol, but I was more interested to find out if there are ways around it, you know, like using the opportunity that one is a teacher to tell the students about the Truth as well.
Minds are shaped in schools, and if certain truths are not given to children at a young age, they are more likely to reject them when they are older. And children are more likely to listen to their teachers nowadays, unfortunately.
I’ve heard so many children retort “… but my teacher said…” in response to what their parents are trying to tell them.
Great to see you again!

Hello Wren,
Welcome to my blog and sunny greetings to you from Singapore.
Thank you for sharing. I’ve just been to the forum that I assume you host. Going to explore a little.

Shalom! -
Don’t be narrow minded. Time have changed and u need to find new ways to evangelise. Before u pass such remarks and conclusion, find out what City Harvest is doing in the missions field, then u talk.
What Sun does and how she dress is far more conservative compared to the other american artisites.
She is not a nun, give her a break.
U mean teachers do not smoke? Teachers do not have sex? Your theory does not apply at all.
I hear some church in Suntec City encourage their members to gamble and drink during CNY, so what about that? Isn’t that worst?
thik kbefore u speak! -
Really? There are new ways to evangelize? Tell me more, please. I only know how to present the Gospel.
Of course she’s not a nun, but one does not need to live like the world does to minister to the world. Pray tell, would you become a homosexual to minister to gay men?
We are called out of the world, not to be in it nor of it.
Please read 1 Peter 2, and think about that, brother.
Shalom!

Ho Yeow Sun is a well-known, or rather, infamous figure amongst conservative evangelicalism in Singapore. Her church had once threatened to sue my friend, as Baptist Pastor, for writing to her and criticizing her from Scripture that what she did was sinful (e.g. immodest dressing etc). How would we expect City Harvest Church to see anything wrong with such behavior?
Very sad indeed …

Well, I have nothing against her, she is doing quite a good job in China, building schools and all. And actually about that, yes time has change, we move according to time, and we should be relevant in presenting our Gospel of Christ to them but not to the extent of compromising the Truth, this is something I am strongly against though. For Sun, I really don’t know about her, let’s not judge her because from the things she is doing now, she is really a blessing to many in China, if you would inspect all the efforts she had put in at China. So it’s really she and God, if she is doing this for herself, I am sure one day God will deal with her if she sincerely wants to follow God but is lost in her ways.
And one more time I would like to reiterate is that, being relevant is one thing and compromising the truth should never happen. I have nothing against being fashionable but again, it boils down to your heart and your motives.
We are called to be in the world but not of the world, check out John 17:15, you see really, we as Christian should not seclude ourselves out of the world as though the world is greater than us, we must by all means, engage the culture, but as we engage culture, we should not/never be of the world, putting in context, it’s alright to be fashionable, we are creative beings, God created us to be creative, but you see we don’t eat what the world eats, so to say their beliefs/values, we consume only God’s Holy Values and Principles from His Word. So back to what I am trying to say is, let say you are in the entertainment circle, witnessing for Christ, one of the world’s value is that, to be successful, you must sleep around with your directors etc. or you have to dress extravagantly sexy (revealing) in order to sell yourself, well in one sense, it’s important to be fashionable in the entertainment circle, but it’s another to know your limit, you don’t have to wear bikinis to be fashionable, there is a limit. Besides in the entertainment circle, to really witness for God is not about how you dress but rather how you use the talent God put in you to bless the world.
So ultimately, for me, whatever she is doing, God bless her, she is my Senior Pastor’s wife. But if ever she is on the wrong path, may God direct her ways and into repentance once again and I myself too am still learning and I want more of Jesus in me, and less of me.

1 Timothy 3:8-11
8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. 9 They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 11 Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things.

more translation on 1 Timothy 3:11
[kjv] Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
[bbe] Women are to be serious in behaviour, saying no evil of others, controlling themselves, true in all things.
