When You Ask “Why Me, Oh Elohim?”

Nick VijucicJust this Sunday I found out that Nick Vijucic spoke at City Harvest Church the previous weekend, and decided to check if there was a video of the service.

Now, I don’t bother with checking out City Harvest Church normally, since I don’t buy into their mega-church prosperity gospel, or their rock concert-grade performances, or seeing pastors with dyed hair, but I just had to give a listen to what Nick Vijucic had to say.

In case you know not who Nick is, he is an Australian who was born without limbs — no arms nor legs — save for a foot that he calls his “chicken drumstick”. Instead of giving up on life, he surmounted all of life’s difficulties with faith in Yahweh and is today sharing the Good News and being an immense inspiration to millions around the world.

Anyway, coming back to my search for the video, they indeed had one, and I immediately checked it out.

The message he gave was nothing but encouraging, and it’s amazing to see someone beset with so much difficulties with so much faith and hope in Yahweh! Personally, I don’t think I’d have made it as far as he has if I were in his shoes (figuratively speaking).

Most of all, one particular point of his message struck me most.

As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.”

John 9:1-3

Yeshua tells us that the blind man was blind from birth, not through the sins or faults of his parents’ or his, but that his circumstance may be the fertile ground upon which the great and wonderful works of Yahweh be made manifest.

In many ways, we can apply this to our own lives — that when we face difficult times, and trials and tribulations in our lives, that our circumstances might be the platform from which Yahweh works His wonderful plans for not just us, but also for those around us.

For through your own experience, and coming out stronger and a better person through the trials and tribulations, that you also become a servant Yahweh is able to use in encouraging others who might go through the same situations in years to come.

Many times we pray that Yahweh makes us an instrument and a true servant, yet when the first spot of trouble hits, we start asking “Why me, Elohim, why?” and never give a thought to the fact that through what we are going through, we glorify Him through the good He does through us.

I hope this has inspired and encouraged you as much as it did me, for I know that there are brothers and sisters out there facing difficulties in their lives, much as I have mine.

Shalom Aleichem.

Thanks for sharing this! I had heard Nick’s story before, but it is one of those stories that is always inspiring, no matter how many times you hear it. And you are right, during times of trial, it is easy to get trapped in a ‘why me’ mentality.

I still face that struggle with my daughter’s medical problems, but it is something I am becoming stronger at overcoming. It helps to keep in mind that “For the glory of God” is a very worthwhile answer to all of those ‘why’ questions.

    Dear Michelle,

Take heart, for I can tell very assuredly that through Jacqui and you, Yahweh is reaching out to moms everywhere in the world to find the love and joy that only He can provide.

Even for those who aren’t parents, your accounts of Jacqui and you touch hearts and lives like mine.

Yahweh bless you and your family, Mic.

    Shalom!

Just as a point of interest, if you don’t subscribe to City Harvest’s teachings, do you not subscribe to New Creation’s teachings as well?

    Dear Farinelli:

Honestly speaking, I don’t really know enough of New Creation to make a statement. However, I do have objections to the prosperity gospel.

    God bless!

    Shalom Aleichem.
